A publication is an ideal platform to showcase your work to galleries and at portfolio reviews. This course will show you the stages of producing your own limited edition photography books from the creation of mock up structures and will cover the basic principals of book making. On the second day you will be taught to use InDesign to insert images and work up layouts ready for print.

A resolution I intend on sticking to is to spend the year being a curious tourist, to look with new eyes at what I see every day, to ask questions and wander without aim, to treat Manchester as I treated New York, with the same awe and wonderment. So as the snow settled on Saturday evening my love led me to the steps of the Midland to embark on a tour of the underground tunnels of the city. We huddled together with a few other hearty souls and embarked on our historic education of Manchester's underground world. Torchlit intrepid footsteps led us to spine-chilling bomb shelters. Darkness + unsettling + snow-cold. romantic.

Some things shake you, tip you up by the toes and arrest you in your tracks. New additions to your world can do that, be it in miniature form or long limbed tallness. I had two days to rest and think, gaze at that sea and watch the earth's rotation, sunrise to sunset. Virus ridden, head woozy, legs frozen still, inactive. Yet the sound of the waves soothed and lulled as the mind sailed in and out of glorious sleep rich dreams, sun shine through sea clouds and shut tight eyelids, mildly aware of the passing days. Those wings are beginning to grow back, gliding me to a carved out cave made of his hope.

After weeks of sorting the tinniest to the most obscure orphaned letterpress type at the NY Center for Book Arts, I selected the font for my New York Intervention message, typeset, printed and distributed 90 cards (one for each day of my stay) around the beautiful city . They were the imprint I left behind, a gesture to the lessons learnt, and a little shock to those that don't expect to receive without giving.

Unable to curb my collectors instinct even whilst living a little hand to mouth, I spy abandoned/broken/sad looking foundlings on New York's streets, I scoop them up, attach thread and hang them from our tree branch. A plastic horse head now dangles from its nostrils, a rusty bolt now adorns a pink satin ribbon, an empty chestnut shell now homes a pair of mink earrings. A season of the simplest pleasures.

On Saturday I walked to Brooklyn Museum, taking in the magic of the 'Unnameable Bookshop', a cup of hot cider at the Prospect Park Farmers Market and some thought provoking exhibits. I sought out the Eva Hesse 'Spectres' show, and the 'Centre for Feminist Art' but found myself captivated by the informal talk and tour given by the NY based artist Sanford Biggers around his current show 'Sweet Funk - An Introspective'. I was particularly drawn to the 'Cheshire Grin' appearing and disappearing above his 'Blossom' tree/piano sculpture. Transported to the comfort of Lewis Carroll's 'Wonderland' yet informed by the reference to racial stereotypes the piece embodies. It was a real treat to hear the artist speak and his energy stayed with me throughout an application endured weekend.

This week I began an Internship at the Centre for Book Arts in Manhattan, which means I can get my hands dirty again in the Print and Bookbinding studios. New work is brewing inside but I'll be much slower on production than these 'Americans at Work' in 1961.

Cobble Hill Cinema on Court Street, Brooklyn is a charming establishment in which to take in a screening. The seats are soft and low, the kind you can melt into for an afternoon. You can have a hot peppermint tea and a box of gummy bears in way of refreshment. The ice cream selection is unusual but conversation with the usher more than makes up for the lacking in flavors.

Upstate Films in Woodstock, is also a fine place to see a picture. They have the choice of two daily screenings within an excellent velvet lined grandiose theatre. There are traditional boxed sweets such as 'Poppets' for your delectation and the projectionist is very gracious in his thanks for your attendance.

Taking the bus to Woodstock in fall via Rosendale to meet the lovely team and talents at the Women's Studio Workshop lived up to expectation. So welcoming, they invited us to stay for a delicious and creative pot luck lunch out on the deck amongst the trees. We spent a peaceful and inspired afternoon reading dozens of editions in their artist's book archive. My eyes were on stalks at the quality of crafts(wo)manship, the facilities available from the magnificent Chandler press to the rye paper making stew and the addictive enthusiasm the workshop emits. So generous in sharing their book making world with us, we were bowled over by the WSW interns, artists and staff, leaving the wooded bliss full hearted.

On to Woodstock for a few sun drenched days, where we hitched a ride up Overlook Mountain by a great stroke of luck with the fabulously lovely Mariella Bisson. She gave us iced tea, luscious views and a tour of her magnificent dream home and studio. Reliant on our feet alone, she whisked us off in her car to 'Maverick' and then 'Birdcliffe' for a glimpse of where Woodstock as an artist's utopia began in 1903. Such an inspiration, amongst the rich landscape, the legacy long, I felt a small sense of belonging in those woods.

Towards the end of October I said farewell to Brooklyn and headed upstate to Woodstock. This vulnerability greeted me on pavement outside the apartment as I left and was reminded of what I can all too often forget. In San Francisco I met a bird hopping on one leg at the Ferry port and stole a few moments studying her grace and struggle whilst a coconut macaroon melted on my tongue. Luc(k)y.

I've been lucky enough to be involved in some delicious projects this Summer which have kept the wolf from the door and the candle burning at both ends. Borbonesa's new publication Othello - A Bestiary with floral additions is a fine edition of screen printed illustrations concertina bound between hard covers adorned with a red foil blocked strawberry. They asked me to help make the 250 covers needed for the launch, which was a pure pleasure. After working on a bespoke box for the Anatomy Project prints, I created an edition of 5 large books. Such satisfying work.

Hockney's 'Bigger Tress near Warter' is at the York City Art Gallery. It took my breath. 50 canvases painted plein air with incredible fluidity and energy. Seeing his masterpiece reminds me of my dad, that he too sees colour and line and that we are connected through Hockney's tree branch pink brush strokes and big eyes for landscape. We had tea at 'Betty's' tea room and held hands and it was the perfect Sunday.

I've not been drinking tea or gazing out of the studio window this past month but on the workshop treadmill from Glasgow to Bolton. It's time to stop and take stock, refill the glue jars, clean the brushes, count the needles and replenish the thread. I've shown 146 people the benefits of creating their own books in the last month which I think gives me legitimate reason to be quiet for a while.

Clinging to Shores

It's incredible how easily and fluent I have become at clinging to shores. Perhaps I'm mostly out at sea and when I see signs of momentary port I sail towards them like the wind, with desperation to belong. You are a port I always cling to. So was he, until recently, until I realised he wasn't a port at all, but a floating buoy. A larger than life, land-like, convincing buoyant buoy, but a buoy-non-the-less. I made a book, wrote a poem about that cling-to port, and it cleverly foresaw all the drifting that inevitably came. Drifting. I recognise it all too easily. We all mostly drift, to and from one decision-denied to the next, in and out of commitment to anything, to anyone; we silently hope the seas will carry us somewhere familiar, or to somewhere new. But carry us they do. It's so very hard to swim against that tide.

I've tap danced to mr. bojangles on a pint of guiness and it finally makes more sense.

Since the Summer I've been gathering material to create an edition of 30 pamphlets documenting the 'Blackburn Book Archive' project. Inspired by funny stories from local paper mill workers, sublime book recommendations from courageous men and delicate confessional mono-prints. The 16pp soft back book has been created for the people of Blackburn though I have a few copies left available.

Over 8 snug evenings come to Hot Bed Press and explore narrative and sequence, form and content, text and image. Become smitten and get inspired by my collection of contemporary artists’ books and give yourself over to being taught the skills you need to make various wondrous book structures of your own. We will use print/type/stitch/folding techniques to develop your bookish creations, drink lots of tea and have inspired conversations while being exceptionally productive. The workshop is suitable for everyone, from complete beginners

to seasoned book makers, as you will dictate the pace. It will also be a great opportunity to allow anyone with an idea for a book that hasn’t yet come to fruition to dedicate the time to experiment with different techniques and get valuable feedback. Be quick to reserve your place at the workshop table and kick 2011 off with the a book case full of enthusiasm.

A new year, or decade, is full of potential. Start yoga (again), go to tap dancing class, draw for half an hour a day, write two pages upon waking, cycle even in the rain. Instead of implementing new regimes this time around, I intend to rid myself of the old routines that hold me back. Holding on instead of letting go, fixing the unfixable, fierce self-reliance, never calling back. A relieved exit from 2010 in the snowy highs of Heriot Toun, with whiskey, whiskers and warmth, waking to a perfect new year breakfast full of hopeful perspective and eggy bread. Happy new you.

Christmas Day preparations were scattered with chocolate box treats. 4 finches perched wanton in the pet shop. Brown paper hares adorning magenta wrapping. A Blackbird shadow in the bindery light. Remembering to look and saturate eyes with other visions of the season comes hard, but meditative making and a Frank Capra philosophy pays dividends.
